MAias Alyamani: Alima

a girl of the desert

Alima is an artistic project directed by Svetlana Schmitz and MAias Alyamani. The music, composed by MAias Alyamani, will be performed by MAias and other musicians of the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra. Svetlana Schmitz wrote the story. Together with Tamara Schaefer they are responsible for the drama. The performance will be accompanied by Christoph Schmitz as narrator.

The story is about Alima, a girl whose family lives in a village in the desert. Her grandfather teaches her to play the oud, showing Alima how music can tell stories about desert life. Though her parents don’t encourage her, Alima practices a lot.

One day the family moves to a big city. What seems to be an exciting adventure turns into a big challenge for Alima. But with inner strength and her love of the oud she finds her way and connects to her new world.

MAias’ music uses Qatari-oriental melodies to celebrate Qatari identity, interacting with the audience in a playful manner. His music introduces the rich world of Arabic sounds to Young and Old alike.

About ACTory

We, Svetlana Schmitz (kindergarten teacher and drama teacher) and Tamara Schaefer (drama teacher), founded the theatre duo ‘ACTory’ in the year 2014 in Doha. Since then we have enchanted kids as well as adults with a variety of theatre such as shadow theatre or scenic plays.
We’ve been performing at various international venues, from small stages in Germany, over the streets of Tuscany/Italy, to the stages in Qatar as actresses for children’s concerts with the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra and with Maktaba, the children’s library.
In collaboration with the Philharmonic our latest productions were the shadow shows for “Peter and the Wolf” and “Carnival of the Animals.”
